We are just one couple, who have had a passion for adventure, to travel, teach, experience and make the most of the life we have been given together. I have always had an interest in a life abroad and was inspired by tales about the travellers around the world, but also, I have been inspired by the people that surround me and their journey too; friends, colleagues and especially my students who often come from places other than where they currently reside which shows we can overcome challenges that may come on our way.
So we decided to take the plunge and see if it was possible for us to move abroad. We looked at our finances, looked at the locations, looked at the pros, looked at the cons, made the lists and discussed until the cows came home. Eventually after going back and forth we had made up our minds. We decided that in the spring we would be taking our two young children and would move to The Middle East.
We decided on Qatar after speaking with many people who live here. Doha’s multicultural mix and international community drew our attention. After much soul searching we felt this was a place we could bring our family, experience a completely different lifestyle and we could have the opportunity to travel all around the world.
In fact we are already in year three of this great adventure. We can happily and safely say it was one of the best life-changing decisions we have made. If we are being honest we are still pinching ourselves that this really isn’t a dream. Of course, there have been ups and downs along the way. Culture shocks have taken place (mainly the driving and the heat) and this is just from me. We do miss the people we left behind including friends, family and teaching colleagues. In another blog I will share the impact on my wife giving up her teaching career too. It is really important we share the rollercoaster experience of international travel with all that it entails and this is our story thus far of living, adventures and memories in the desert.
